Background:
Mali's parents thought she'd grow out of it, her wild abandon of logic and thought. As she grew older, they came to realize it wasn't necessarily by choice. It was a kind of learn disability or mental defect. They did find, however, that giving her something she could find a passion for would help her focus and allowed her to make progress. Mali always had a love of flowers, so first they tried alchemy. Tried to see if she'd like to help her father mix potions. It worked at first, then she lost interest. Next they tried inscription. That she held on to. She loved to mix the herbs to make inks and make pretty designs and words on paper.
Her career training went much the same way. They tried for so long to find activities that would suit her. She didn't like hunting at all, so that attempt didn't last long. She wouldn't even hold the bow, never wanting to hurt an animal that wasn't attacking her. Next her father took her to teach her the art of stealth. It lasted a little longer. She seemed to be getting the hang of it. Really enjoying herself, until she was attacked by a bandit.
It was her first time alone, really. First time she was going to branch out and put her rogue skills to good use. It was just suppose to be a spy job. Lurk in the shadows and retrieve information. She hadn't meant to, but she dropped her quill as she was writing. Then, instead of leaving, she apologized for dropping the pen and tried to retrieve it. The bandit leader took her hand and brought her fingers to the blade, cutting them to the bone. She couldn't really concentrate on the words of warning, as she ran as fast as she could back home.
She made it very clear that she never wanted to do that ever again. She needed time to get over the trauma and find her place in the world. Thinking they were simply coddling her too much, her parents spoke to her about joining a monastery. After explaining what it was and what they do, she agreed to go. There, she learned the way of the Mistweavers, thrilled to learn about the power of Chi. She gained more discipline than she'd ever had before, found strength she didn't know she had, and earned a sense of self she could have never found if she would have stayed with her parents.
Of course, she wised up a little, but there were many times her Master shook his head. And there will be many more times her future friends will do the same. She is still a bit absent-minded. Mali still says and does things that make no sense or are frustrating to others. She's very easy to manipulate and so gullible, but she loves to make new friends. She will help anyone who needs it. Mali is finally on her own path.
